5 herbs to include in your diet this winter

Along with warm sunny afternoons and a supply of citrus fruits, the winter season is also associated with cold, cough and various flu. 

Now more than ever, we need to immunize ourselves and be wary of these diseases and boost our immunity to curb the covid-19 virus. Herbs are a great way to strengthen immunity. 

Here are some herbs to include in your diet, that will contribute to your holistic wellness as well.

 

  • Curcumin  

Curcumin found in turmeric or haldi as most south-Asians know it, is the ultimate health-packed ingredient you could add to your diet. It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich herb. It also helps in fighting pathogens and bacteria. Curcumin is also recommended to patients with heart conditions, cancer, and other chronic diseases. Add it to your soup, milk, dal, and curry or even in your sautéed vegetables.

Curcumin is also said to be a great anti-ageing ingredient, so your insides and skin both benefit from the intake of curcumin.

 

  • Tulsi  

Also known as Holy basil, along with religious significance, tulsi is an ayurvedic herb with many health properties. It relieves allergies, bronchitis, and breathing issues. Being an antioxidant and anti-septic herb, it is safe to consume daily. It lowers blood pressure, stress, and keeps the body warm as well, especially in the winters.  

As per Ayurveda, there are 2 forms of Holy Basil; Rama and Shyama. Shayma Tullsi is more potent and should be added as an anti-septic, anti viral herb to fight both, common flu and Covid-19.

It is advisable to add it in a herbal tea or chewing 2-3 fresh leaves on its own. 

 

 

  • Rosemary 

Apart from a delicious culinary ingredient, rosemary also boasts of health benefits. It is rich in vitamin B, iron, and calcium. Rosemary helps calm the nervous system and lift one’s spirits. Add it to your soups, salads, baked dishes, and vegetables. Rosemary tea is said to improve digestion, regulate blood pressure, improve heart health and boost immunity. 

 

  

  • Elder

Derived from the Elder tree, elderflower and elderberries are a treasure trove of benefits. It is effective in curing swollen sinuses, influenza, bronchitis, diabetes and constipation. Elderberries are used in making syrups and supplements. Elderflower tea is a fantastic antioxidant and a great mind relaxer. It is also used to soothe a sore throat and as a gargle.

 

  • Ginger 

A staple in all our kitchens, ginger is a versatile herb providing numerous health benefits. It is an amazing botanical healer as it promotes healthy digestion, heart circulation, shields from the common cold, and keeps our body warm in the cold weather. It’s antiviral and anti-bacterial properties soothe a sore throat and a sick stomach. 

Effective ways of consuming ginger include, plain ginger tea, spice up your coffee with it, put ginger juice in your smoothie or just add it to your vegetables.
